Advancing the Tradition

For Faculty

Do your research interests sit outside of our current Requests for Proposals? While funding opportunities are highly competitive, IHS welcomes proposals that hold significant promise for advancing the liberal intellectual tradition. If you have an idea you think might qualify, please apply below.

We are especially interested in proposals that bridge disciplines. Research deliverables can include peer-reviewed publications, policy white papers, or shareable research databases. Awardees may also be expected to participate in follow-up programming aimed at sharing and refining their research projects.

Please Note: IHS grants cannot support institutional overhead or indirect costs

Timeline

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; applicants typically hear back within six weeks.

Common Questions

Can I apply to Advancing the Tradition and listed RFPs at the same time?

Yes. If your research is genuinely relevant to multiple Requests for Proposals, you may submit separate applications. Each will be reviewed on its own merits.

Can independent scholars without institutional affiliation apply?

Applicants should be affiliated with an accredited college or university. Independent scholars are generally not eligible, though exceptions may be considered for exceptional projects.

Do I need to be affiliated with IHS or have prior IHS support to apply?

No. Applications are open to any eligible scholar at an accredited institution. Prior participation is not required.
